Followers of the game knew it would be a hard ask for the record Nigerian champions following Ikorodu United’s new found form and so it turned out in the five-goal thriller that had fans applauding the spectacular display of Nigerian football.
Paul Aigbogun’s team came from behind twice to equalize, but they did not have the legs to go the whole hog in the goal feast served by the teams.
Fatai Abdullahi got the opener for the ‘Oga Boys’ when he converted a move by hardworking Chinedu Onyelonu. Enyimba hit back immediately when Mfon Udoh converted a spot kick given for a foul on Musa Najare in the box.
The first half ended 1-1. But just seven minutes into the second half, Ikorodu United retook the lead through Balogun Abdullahi’s blinder that confounded goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.
Not ready to give up easily, Enyimba equalised shortly after with Musa Najare applying the finish, which led to a mass attack in search of the winning goal.
They were, however, shocked in the 68th minute by Michael Okoyoh, whose 68th minute goal deflated the defending champions.
