Internet swooning as US first lady, Michelle Obama hugged George W Bush at the opening of the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of African American History and Culture

Many on social media are hailing this hug as a rare display of great American spirit among two members of rival parties, ahead of a crucial election.

A photograph of Obama hugging Bush, as the latter leans into the First Lady has gone viral on social media platforms. The event transpired when Bush was the featured speaker at the opening of the Smithsonian Institution’s first national museum about African-American history at Washington, DC.

Both Obama and Bush addressed the gathering. “A great nation does not hide its history… It faces its flaws, and corrects them,” Bush is reported to have said. Obama spoke at length about the importance and relevance of Black history. “Over the years, I’ve always been comforted as I’ve watched this museum rise from this earth into this remarkable tribute. Because I know that years from now, like all of you, Michelle and I will be able to come here to this museum, and not just bring our kids but hopefully our grandkids. I imagine holding a little hand of somebody and tell them the stories that are enshrined here,” Obama said.

The ex-President had played a part in the making of the museum, and was there along with former president Bill Clinton.
