A motion seeking the Senate to invite the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawan Daura over last weekend’s arrest of some judges has been rejected.

The House of Representatives, Tuesday, ruled to probe the arrest of the judges but equally backed the motion of the upper chambers in refusing to summon DSS, Lawan Daura.

In the motion brought under matters of urgent national importance, senator Joshua Lidani from Gombe state had urged the Senate to invite Daura to explain the rationale behind the clampdown on the judges and the manner the secret police carried out the operation.

Although lawmaker, Mojeed Alabi, suggested that the House should respect the principles of separation of powers and stay away from the matter, but the House approved the motion nonetheless.

Lidani claimed that it is the constitutional responsibility of the National Judicial Council, NJC, to see to the discipline of corrupt judges, and not the DSS.

The motion got the nod of the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio.

When the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki put the motion to a voice vote, most senators yelled “ayes” and later “nay” in what seems like a 50-50 proportion.

The Senate President eventually ruled that the “nays” had it, when their voices overshadowed those of the “ayes”.
